How do I choose a putter?

Choosing the Right Disc Golf Putter: Feel Over Flight

If you're just getting started in disc golf—or even if you're a seasoned player refining your short game—there’s one universal truth about putters: feel matters more than flight.

Unlike drivers or midranges, putters are all about precision, comfort, and confidence. You’re not shaping long lines with a putter; you're sinking short-range shots, and that means the best putter for you is the one that feels right in your hand.

Don’t Chase the “Best” Putter—Find Your Putter

Every year, new molds make the rounds as “the best” putter—popular picks like the Discraft Zone, Axiom Pixel, or Infinite Discs Alpaca come to mind. But in truth, there’s no one-size-fits-all champion. Why? Because putting isn’t about distance or speed—it’s about repetition, routine, and feel.

Start with a putter that fits naturally in your hand and inspires confidence. The more comfortable the grip, the more consistent your release will be.

Understand the Features: Beads, Plastics & Thumb Tracks

  • Beaded vs Beadless: A bead is a small ridge on the bottom of the disc. Some players love the tactile feedback a beaded putter provides. Others prefer the smooth release of a beadless mold. There’s no right answer—just what feels best.
  • Thumb Tracks & Microbeads: Some discs have thumb grooves or microbeads (small ridges) that enhance grip control. Again, the benefit is personal—try a few and see what clicks.
  • Plastic Type: This one’s huge. Most putters come in multiple plastic blends, from firm and slick to soft and tacky. Softer blends tend to grab the chains better and feel more secure in your grip, while stiffer ones are more durable and consistent in extreme temps.

Why Feel Is King (Even Over Flight Numbers)

Putters don’t vary as drastically in flight characteristics as drivers or mids. The reality is that inside the circle, your throwing angle and consistency will matter far more than the disc’s rated glide or fade.

So if you’re comparing putters with similar flight numbers, default to feel. If it fits your grip and your mind feels calm and confident when you line up a putt, that’s the right one.

A Smart Way to Start: Try a Few Styles

If you’re a beginner (or helping someone who is), start by grabbing 2–3 putters that represent different styles:

  • One beaded and one beadless
  • One in firm plastic, one in soft
  • Maybe one with a thumb track just to feel the difference

Throw them side-by-side, and you’ll learn what works for you. Don’t overthink the specs—just trust your hands.

Bonus Tip: Stick With What Works

Once you find a putter you love, buy multiples of it. Keeping your practice consistent is one of the best ways to build confidence. You can always experiment with new putters later—but it’s hard to beat familiarity when it’s time to cash in from 30 feet.
